Tips for Properly Explaining Your Divorce To Your Children

Go into the conversation you have with your children with a plan.

It's important that you at least have somewhat of a plan when going into this and that you're not speaking poorly about your ex in front of your kids. That may be too easy for you to do when you are emotional. Take a few minutes to get a plan together in your head or on paper and go into this with a guide.

Be honest.

We can't stress this enough, be honest. Let your children know that they aren't the blame for this and that this is a decision you and their other parent came to yourselves. You may avoid your children going through the emotional trauma of blaming themselves by going about it this way. Also, answer any questions they may have honestly. Be upfront and speak calmly to your children. Set a good example by not getting dramatic and emotional in front of them about the divorce.

If you already know which parent is moving out, let your kids know that too.

Typically, when two parents decide to divorce, one will likely stay in the currently shared home and the other will leave. The parent moving out will likely try to find a home relatively close so that it is easier to share custody of the children. If you already know who is moving, be honest about that with your kids.
